This self-paced course is compiled and refined from courses I have taught in Beowulf and Medieval literature over the last six years, progressing through the poem with some introduction to Old English etymology, Germanic culture of the Migration Age with readings from classical authors like Tacitus and Jordanes, and many other facets of early Anglo-Saxon culture. The course explores basic mythological themes and symbolic literacy, especially applied to Germanic cultural elements of distinction like kingship and kinship, loyalty and oaths, magic weapons and liminal landscapes. This course is geared towards students 8th grade and up, and would be an excellent companion to something like a homeschool Medieval literature syllabus.

The course includes videos of readings for each chapter of the poem in Old English alongside the modern English translation, and has 12 lesson plans that lay out chapter summaries and reading plan assignments, comprehension check questions for teachers, essay and discussion topics, and cultural and etymological contextual material. These lessons are based on the plans I used teaching Beowulf to 8th and 9th graders, and I would generally work through 2 lessons a week, selecting one of the essay or discussion topics for that week, allowing the students to work through the whole poem in some depth in 6 weeks.

It is accompanied by the Celtic Art Course (included with this purchase) that provides tutorials in Insular art styles and composition so students can learn the craft of making knotworks, spiral patterns, runes and display capitals, calligraphy, and more. There is also a basic bookbinding tutorial for loose-leaf binding specifically so they can print out the black-and-white Beowulf text, paint or color it, then bind in themselves in Medieval style.
